Mahler Composer
Born in 1860 in the historical country Bohemia (now part of the Czech Republic), Mahler is regarded as a pioneer of 20th century compositional techniques, bridging the gap between 19th century Romanticism and 20th century modernism. In spite of facing notable backlash against his ethnicity and background, Mahler pursued a very successful career as a conductor in his own lifetime in positions such as the musical director of the Vienna Court Opera from 1897-1907 and the director of New York City’s Metropolitan Opera in 1908. Sadly, Mahler’s compositions were largely disregarded when he was alive and it is only today that we recognise the sheer power and beauty of his ten (if we are to count the unfinished tenth) symphonies.
