GUY CUTTING & GEORGE IRELAND: WHITHER MUST I WANDER?
Guy Cutting (tenor) and George Ireland (piano) present a programme of songs exploring the feelings and experiences of the traveller who wanders far from home.
We journey from a peaceful English countryside of apple trees, birdsong and water mills to more unfamiliar climes by land and sea. Tinged by a longing for home and nostalgia the programme is centred around Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Songs of Travel, and includes a new commission by young British composer, Piers Connor Kennedy, written especially for this programme, alongside songs by Ivor Gurney, Benjamin Britten, Jonathan Dove and Peter Warlock.
Full programme:
Ralph Vaughan Williams The Water Mill; Slow Air (from Suite of 6 Short Pieces); Linden Lea; Sky above the roof
Ivor Gurney The Apple Orchard; Desire in Spring; Bread and Cherries; A Piper; Walking Song
Benjamin Britten Sailing (from Holiday Diary); Midnight on the Great Western; Down by the Salley Gardens
Jonathan Dove Fair Ship; Calm is the morn
Peter Warlock My Own Country
