Christmas Oratorio in Brussels

Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) was originally composed to be performed in Leipzig’s two main churches – St Thomas and St Nicholas – over six feast days during the Christmas period.  In tonight’s programme we perform Parts 1, 5 and 6 with a cast of soloists featuring some of the most dynamic rising stars of the UK’s historical performance scene. 

Composed for Christmas Day itself, drums and bright flutes herald the birth of Jesus in Part 1. Part 5 is gorgeously scored with prominent solo parts for oboe d’amore. Then propelled by joyful trumpets and timpani, the closing Part 6, moves the action on to the journey and arrival of the Magi in Bethlehem at the festival of Epiphany.
